2018 Family History Benefit Dinner : David McCullough
On April 28, 2018 over 265 guests joined us at the Fairmont Copley Plaza hotel for the Family History Benefit Dinner, honoring author and NEHGS honorary member David McCullough with our Lifetime Achievement Award in history and biography. It has been claimed as our best event to date.
David was presented with an updated genealogy by Brenton Simons, having received an original one back in 1995 when he was a speaker at our dinner. With the unveiling of more genealogical records we surprised David with some fascinating family discoveries. Appropriately, it was found that David is related to some important authors in history including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Emily Dickinson, Henry Adams, Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, Tennessee Williams, and Ken Burns. David is also related to characters within his own novels, including Alice Hathaway Lee and Edith Kermit Carrow, first and second wife to Theodore Roosevelt, respectively, as well as Orville and Wilbur Wright. Most interesting, David is related to the founder of NEHGS, Lemuel Shattuck. 2017 NEHGS Lifetime Achievement Award Honoree Stacy Schiff led an engaging conversation with David covering a wide range of topics including his influences, inspiration, and his family history.
Platinum Benefactor for the evening was Wells Fargo. Gold Benefactors for the evening were: Hemenway & Barnes, Sit Investment Associates, Nancy S. Maulsby. Silver Benefactors for the evening were: 3EDGE Asset Management, Welch & Forbes LLC, Judith Avery, Missy and Marsh Carter, Thomas Bailey Hagen, Robert Pemberton and Barbara Jordan, Justin and Genevieve Wyner.
