2018 Winter Dinner : Bill Fowler
On January 25, 2018, we gathered at the Harvard Club in Boston for our Winter Dinner honoring renowned historian and author William M. Fowler, Jr. with the Lifetime Achievement Award in History and Biography. NEHGS President and CEO Brenton Simons recalled that “As chairman of the Board of Trustees of the New England Historic Genealogical Society from 1991-1996, Fowler bright renewed energy to NEHGS and modernization to the Society’s facilities – pioneering efforts to launch NEHGS into the digital age.” Fowler continues to serve on the NEHGS Board of Trustees as Trustee Emeritus.
Fowler’s expertise in naval lore and history combined with his skills from a distinguished career as Professor of History at Northeastern University, have brought him recognition and acclaim. He is former executive director of the Massachusetts Historical Society, and the former editor of the New England Quarterly. In tribute to Fowler’s distinguished career, Mayor Martin J. Walsh proclaimed Thursday, January 25, to be William M. Fowler, Jr. Day throughout the City of Boston.
The dinner’s Gold Benefactors were Robert Pemberton and Barbara Jordan and Northeastern University. Benefactors included Frederick D. Ballou; Mary and Marshall Carter; Stephen H. Case; Elizabeth B. Johnson; Jo Anne Makely; William R. Marsh, MD; Nancy S. Maulsby; Lionel and Vivian Spiro; Jonathan Buck Treat and Leslie Aitken; Nancy and John Webster; and Albert J. Zdenek, Jr.
